World Athletics Championships 2022: Annu Rani places seventh in women’s javelin final



Annu Rani, the national record holder for India, came in seventh place in the final women’s javelin throw on Day 8 of the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon on July 23 with a best throw of 61.12 metres, two metres short of her personal best of 63.82 metres.

Australia’s Kelsey-Lee Barber won the gold with a huge throw of 66.91 metres, while Japan’s Haruka Kitagichi won the silver medal with a throw of 63.27 metres, giving her country its first medal in a javelin event at the World Championships. Shiying Liu of China finished fourth with a best performance of 63.25m.

Rani’s series read

Rani’s series lasted 56.18m, 61.12m, 59.27m, 58.14m, 59.98m, and 58.70m. She has a season and personal best of 63.82m.

The national record holder qualified for the final as the eighth best thrower in the qualification round, with a throw of 59.60m.

Rani made her third appearance in the showpiece. In the previous edition in 2019, she finished eighth in the finals with a best throw of 61.12m. After finishing 10th in her qualification group, she was unable to qualify for the finals in London in 2017.

Annu set a new national record with a throw of 63.82m while winning gold at the Indian Open Javelin Throw Competition in Jamshedpur in May.
