How a teacher is transforming young minds into environmental conservators

Mohit Kumar Roy is not your typical science teacher. He’s on a mission to connect his students in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands with their local environment, teaching them to become protectors of their unique natural world.

Passion for Conservation

Chanchal Singha Roy, a general science teacher, is dedicated to instilling a love for nature and wildlife conservation in his students. Most of them come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, but Roy believes that everyone can play a role in preserving the islands’ incredible biodiversity.

A Place-Based Approach

Roy takes a place-based approach to education. He encourages his students to explore and understand their surroundings, including the lush forests, meandering rivers, and diverse wildlife. Roy says, “Andaman and Nicobar Islands are rich in biodiversity but they also need to be protected by those who live here.”

Teaching runs in Roy’s family. His father was a teacher, and so is his wife. This academic environment has inspired him to make a difference through education.

Interactive Learning

Roy’s teaching methods are anything but conventional. He engages his students by having them map their villages, identify ecological hotspots, and mark areas that require environmental care and protection. This interactive approach has attracted children from remote villages to attend his classes.

Some students, like 12-year-old Aditya Ram, travel long distances to attend Roy’s classes. Aditya walks five kilometers through the forest, crossing a broken bridge and a small stream daily. His dedication is a testament to Roy’s impact.

Inspired Future Teachers

Many of Roy’s students aspire to follow in his footsteps. Mohit Kumar, a 15-year-old, dreams of becoming a teacher like Roy. He’s learned about mangrove ecosystems, mapped his village, and explored the rivers in the region, thanks to Roy’s teachings.

Roy doesn’t limit education to the classroom. He organizes outdoor activities, nature-based games, and photography lessons to make learning engaging. He wants to ensure that his students never find studies boring.

Beyond school hours, Roy conducts open-air classes in the village during holidays and weekends. He wants to reach more children and inspire their interest in science, biodiversity, and nature conservation.

Supporting Dreams

Even amidst financial challenges, parents like Barun Bairagi, a fisherman, value their children’s education. Despite the unpredictability of fishing earnings, Bairagi is determined to support his children’s education. He acknowledges the pivotal role Roy plays in their lives.

Chanchal Singha Roy’s dedication to nurturing young minds as environmental conservators is a heartwarming example of how education can inspire change and empower communities, even in the most remote regions.
