World Weight lifting Championships 2023: Mirabai Chanu to lead Indian team

India gears up for the World Weightlifting Championships 2023 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and all eyes are on Tokyo 2020 Olympics silver medallist, Mirabai Chanu, who will headline the Indian contingent. This prestigious event, taking place from September 4 to 17, serves as a crucial qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Mirabai Chanu’s Quest:

Renowned two-time world championships medallist, Mirabai Chanu, is set to compete in the women’s 49kg category. Her exceptional talent and dedication have made her a force to be reckoned with in the world of weightlifting. She’s currently honing her skills at St. Louis’ SQUAT University under the guidance of Dr. Aron Horschig.

Indian team participants

In the women’s 55kg event, Bindyarani Devi, the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships gold medalist, will represent India. Her remarkable journey in weightlifting has brought her to this prestigious global stage.

India’s men’s team boasts exceptional talent, with Commonwealth Games 2022 champion Achinta Sheuli competing in the 73kg category alongside reigning national champion Narayana Ajith. Adding to the excitement is Shubham Todkar, the gold medalist in the 61kg category at the ongoing Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in New Delhi.

Mirabai Chanu’s Remarkable Journey:

This championship marks Mirabai Chanu’s second competition of the year. After a five-month rehabilitation following hip surgery last December, she showcased her resilience at the Asian Championships in May, finishing sixth.

A Glimpse into the Future:

The World Weightlifting Championships 2023 in Riyadh not only holds Olympic qualification significance but also sets the stage for the upcoming Asian Games 2023. With the same team, except Shubham Todkar, representing India at this continental event scheduled from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, China, the nation eagerly awaits their performance on the global stage.
